Les t\u00e9moignages sont unanimes : c\u2019est un personnage hors du commun par sa taille, son \u00e9nergie, sa  curiosit\u00e9  et  la  sympathie  qu\u2019il  inspire.  Ses  amis  sont  innombrables.  D\u00e8s  sa  jeunesse  boh\u00e8me,  il  fr\u00e9quente  la  fine  fleur  de  la  litt\u00e9rature  parisienne  :  Charles  Baudelaire, G\u00e9rard de Nerval, Henry Murger, Th\u00e9ophile Gautier. Lorsqu\u2019il se lance dans  la  photographie,  c\u2019est  tout  le  monde  des  arts,  des  lettres,  de  la  presse  qui  pose dans son magnifique atelier du 35 boulevard des Capucines o\u00f9 tout est rouge, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la veste de Nadar. Il r\u00e9alise les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres portraits de Baudelaire, Nerval, Hugo, George Sand, Manet, Sarah Bernhardt, Armand Barb\u00e8s. Malgr\u00e9 le succ\u00e8s de son atelier qui perdure jusqu\u2019au milieu du XXe si\u00e8cle, bien vite la photographie ne lui suffit plus. Il se lance avec passion dans quelques-unes des grandes aventures de son si\u00e8cle : l\u2019a\u00e9rostation, les usages de l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9, le combat r\u00e9publicain. Jules Verne le prend pour mod\u00e8le de son h\u00e9ros Michel Ardan dans <em>De la Terre \u00e0 la Lune<\/em>. Il combat toutes les injustices dans les journaux o\u00f9 il \u00e9crit jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa mort.
